Boards That Stay Wet, and What That Does Underfoot

A deck on the south side of the house, or under an established tree, holds moisture for weeks at a stretch through winter. Damp boards grow algae and mould, that film turns a deck slippery, and on steps down to the lawn it is how people come off.

Most of the fix is built in rather than applied later: gaps set so water and leaf litter fall through instead of sitting on the bearers, ground graded to drain, frame kept clear of soil so air moves underneath. Where shade is permanent a grooved profile helps, and several composite ranges carry a tested slip rating.

Height is easy to underestimate. A deck level with a back door can clear the mark at its far corner where the ground falls away. We settle the finished height and the engineering at the on-site visit, so any permit step is priced and scheduled from the start.

How Often You Will Be Out There With a Brush

Hardwood wants a wash and a re-oil about once a year to hold its colour, sooner where the deck sits in shade. Once the coating wears through where people walk, it takes a light sand before the next coat. Treated pine runs on a stain at much the same interval. Leave either three or four seasons and the re-coat becomes a full sand back.

Composite wants a wash and little else. No oil, no stain, no sanding. Keep leaf litter out of the gaps and look over the fixings every couple of years.
