Decking Nar Nar Goon

Choosing Between Merbau, Spotted Gum and a Composite Board

Start with how much of the year the boards spend wet. West Gippsland winters are cool and long on rain, and that separates the two board families further than the look of them does.

Merbau and Spotted Gum are the hardwoods most surfaces get laid in: dense, good underfoot, and rich in colour for as long as there is oil on them. Treated pine costs less and usually ends up as the frame rather than the surface. Left bare, all three go grey inside a couple of seasons.

Composite is the other family: Ekodeck, Modwood and WoodEvo. Colour runs through the board rather than sitting on it, so there is no yearly coat to keep up. What it does not do is replace the frame underneath, still timber or steel on footings and still the part that decides how long the deck stands. Nor can it keep a board dry.

Our Clients Says

Only Kane Dalman from Big Fella Landscapes was able to confidently answer all our questions. At every step of the way we were consulted by Kane Dalman ensuring no surprises. Three years later we still receive the WOW comments when guests experience our back yard. We even contracted Big Fella to come back and landscape our front yard and gave them free reign as we were so confident in their style and professionalism.

I wish to thank you for the wonderful landscaping job done by Big Fella Landscapes. Your company was a true pleasure to work with. Everyone in your team was professional and courteous, on the job each day and competently led by yourself. As an owner builder, I had to personally deal with many contractors during the construction of my new house and I can truly say that out of all the contractors I have used Big Fella was the best one.

What Gets Asked Before the Build

Do you install composite decking here, or only timber?

Both, and composite is a straight choice rather than a special build. Ekodeck, Modwood and WoodEvo are the ranges we work with, and we build the deck rather than drop the boards off. The frame under it is still timber or steel, footed the same way.

How long should a timber deck last?

Longer than most people expect, as long as the part you cannot see is right. What ends a deck early is nearly always the frame: bearers against damp soil, footings too shallow, or no airflow underneath.

How can I see the standard of your decking work?

Ask to see finished decks. We keep before-and-after photos and work-in-progress shots, and Kane can talk you through how each one was framed, fixed and finished. Every deck carries a 12-month workmanship guarantee.
