Getting Flat, Usable Ground Out of a Sloping Block

If the only level part of your place is the ground the house stands on, the first stage is earthworks. Cut into the high side, fill and compact the low side, set the falls running away from the house and the shed. Only then is there a surface worth laying anything on.

On a township allotment that might be one terrace and a paved area behind the back door. On acreage it runs bigger: a compacted pad for a shed or a water tank, an entrance track firm enough to take a delivery truck, retaining that follows a boundary line rather than a garden bed. Our excavators and Kanga machines handle either scale, and bulk soil, sand, aggregate and ready-mix concrete are supplied out of a supply yard in the township, so a Bunyip job is not held up waiting on materials.

What Happens to the Trees That Are Already There

Have you got established fruit trees, or an old shade tree standing where the paving is meant to go? Plenty of Bunyip properties do, and a mature tree shapes a design far more than most people expect.

A tree you want to keep changes the earthworks around it. Cut is kept off the root zone, fill is kept away from the trunk, paving is edged clear rather than butted hard against it, and drainage is routed so the new levels do not drown what has been growing there for decades. A retaining wall will often sit on a line chosen by a tree rather than by the fence.

If something is coming out, that call is made with you at the site visit and priced into the quote, not raised once the machine is already on site. Where a tree goes, screen or shade planting can go back in to cover what you lose.

Planting a Block That Backs Onto Paddocks

Wanting the front lawn gone is a common starting point out here, and what replaces it is a design question rather than a mowing one. Garden beds instead of grass, plant selection chosen to bring birds in, mulch and edging that hold their shape without weekly attention.

Boundaries on a larger property carry their own work. Screen planting along a fence line for privacy from the road, a windbreak on the exposed side, timber screens where planting alone will not do it quickly enough.
